The long, hot stretch of Interstate where commerce moves through East Tennessee became the scene of a hours-long manhunt Thursday after a semi reported stolen in Kentucky was chased down the highway and disabled with spike strips, law enforcement officials said.
Authorities say the pursuit began when Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers sought help tracking a tractor-trailer believed taken without permission. The vehicle traveled north on Interstate 75 before continuing onto Interstate 40, where deputies in Roane County used spike strips to puncture the truck's tires and bring it to a stop at the Industrial Park exit.
Foot pursuit, woods and a call that reopened the search
When the semi stopped, the driver — identified by authorities as Trever Helton of London, Kentucky — ran into nearby woods, according to the Loudon County Sheriff's Office.

Several hours later, an employee at a nearby business contacted 911 after a man approached the worker's truck, admitted he had run from law enforcement and asked to use the phone, officials said.
